No figures are available regarding the imports

of cocaine into the Straits Settlements or the Federated Maley States. In a note by Dr. D.K. McDowell, Principal Civil Medical Officer in Singapore, dated the 28th November 1905, and published in the Proceedings of the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements for 1906, it is pointed out that 40 ounces of cocaine are sold by registered chemists each month in Singapore, and that probably this does not nearly cover the sale of the drug. It is added that sales in the other Settlements

and in the Federated Malay States are even heavier than in Singapore.

In a second note dated the 27th March, 1906, Dr. McDowell says "Singapore shows a monthly expenditure of 9 oz. 255 grains, and Penang 19 oz. 199 grains of cocaine.
